Lulu, Grandpa Yosef’s brother
Letter from Grandpa Yosef to his brother Lulu
The original letter was written in Hungarian by Grandpa Yosef to his brother Lulu. Lulu was the brother of Grandpa Yosef, the father of Eli and Haim. The two original pages are shown here together with an English translation.
English translation
Note: the Hungarian handwriting is difficult to read in several places. This is a working translation, faithful as far as the legible text allows; uncertain passages are marked in brackets and should not be treated as a certified legal translation.
Dear Lulu, Regina and the children! I have just received your letter and I am replying right away so that you will receive mine in time. We were happy to hear that you are well and healthy. Things are all right here too, considering the circumstances. I often get tired and my leg hurts, but that is probably what time and age bring. May I remain as I am.
Dear Lulu, when you left you gave me power of attorney. Before the nationalisation I sold the land and also the two front rooms of the house; I wrote to you about this at the time. What remained of the house were the two rooms, the bathroom and pantry, as well as the three rooms at the back where the tenants lived, the garden and part of the courtyard.
Grandpa then explains the arrangement made with the person who bought the two rooms and the rights that would apply in the event of a future sale. He refers to the contract, the power of attorney and copies that Lulu had. Part of the legal wording in this paragraph is not legible enough to translate reliably word for word.
Grandpa continues by explaining that, before leaving, he had to arrange documents relating to the property, and that if anything should later be recovered from the property he is asking for nothing for himself [the exact sentence is not fully legible]. He mentions the sale of the land and the sale of part of the house in 1949.
On the second page he summarises the situation of the rooms and the property and continues to describe the arrangements concerning the part that was sold, the house and the courtyard. Several handwritten lines are ambiguous and are therefore not presented here as certain facts.
At the end he sends love and good wishes to the whole family: “We kiss all of you with much love and wish you all the best.” He signs as a loving brother, Lajos.
